What Do Air Cadets Do?

You name it, there is a good chance there is an Air Cadet somewhere doing it!

103 (Doncaster) Sqn is part of South and West Yorkshire Wing, which comprises some 39 Squadrons, with around 1500 Air Cadets. The Wing aim's to provide a stimulating, exciting and varied training program, which ensures that all cadets have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Most Squadrons will meet twice a week during which cadets are able to take part in many activities, 103 (Doncaster) Sqn. meets on Wednesday and Friday evenings 1900 hrs to 2100 hrs

Activities are also organised by the Wing and beyond by North Region and the ACO. These can take place at RAF bases, camps and even abroad, such activities tend to be a longer than just a weekend.

The Air Cadet Organisation (ACO) excels in many areas, to ensure state of the art facilities are available at a more local level, the organization intends to establish cadet Regional Activity Centres (RACs) across the country, initially two per region to introduce and improve opportunities for cadets to experience the range of cadet activity across the Corps.

Activities

Activities are a key feature of life in the Air Cadets and all squadrons partake in a variety of these activities which are designed to help fulfil the aims of the Air Training Corps

From flying to rock climbing, cadets get the opportunity to put academic instruction into practice, such as navigation, team leadership and theory of flight, all skills they can put to good use whether or not they choose a military career.

North Region Activity Centre (East)

RAF Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire is the home of the first RAC. This has been combined with North Region’s initiative aerospace centre, which is also based at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. This permits the centre to deliver the core cadet activities of air experience flying and gliding but has also allowed this to be extended to offer aerospace activities (blue) and field craft activities (green). Cadets have the opportunity to take part in other activities such as sport/adventure training, First Aid, shooting, mountain biking, rock climbing etc, based on a weekend of programme activities.

A key part of the Regional Activity Centre has been the integration of the Regional Aerospace Centre at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. The centre currently offers a rage of learning based activities, which complement the more practical activities offered at the Activity Centre.

Flight Simulator

The Centre has a commercially built state-of-the-art flight simulator that has been tailor made for North Region Cadets. Based on Microsoft F/ Sim. technology, and subsequently tweaked by the Royal Air Force to give true-to-life handling for RAF aircraft ranging from the Grob Tutor flown by Cadets as part of Air Experience Flying to the Tucano Basic Fast Jet Trainer.

The simulator has a full constructed cockpit, authentic controls and a projection system to surround pilots with a photographically accurate view of the simulated world around them.

Air Traffic Control Simulator

The Centre's innovative air traffic control simulator enables Cadets and Staff to experience the challenging task of controlling aircraft, including precision approaches. The simulator is supplemented by real-time radar feeds displaying information about actual aircraft flying within 250 nautical miles of RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

Radio Suite

The Centre's radio suite gives Cadets the equipment and resources to study for radio licenses and to communicate with fellow Cadets throughout the UK and overseas.

Interactive Multimedia Centre

The Centre has a computers network, providing an interactive and exciting platform for learning map reading, first aid, weapons training and flying tuition.

Cadets are able to use software that covers a range of aerospace, technology and other Cadet Organisation training activities. Cadets can learn about Global Positioning System (GPS) using handheld GPS units; study navigation; conduct experiments in rocketry by building and launching their own virtual rockets; and use a wind tunnel to conduct experiments into aerodynamics.
